Happy Repair Day 2023!

22nd October 2023 is National Repair Day! And it also marks the launch of a campaign which is asking individuals and community based organisations to lobby their MPs to support a new UK Repair and Reuse Campaign.

The declaration is pleading for UK policy makers to take a much more proactive role in promoting repair and re-use as popular and easy options - rather than the ‘chuck it away if it’s broken’ thinking which dominates now.

There are many barriers to repair now making it difficult: products are not designed to be repairable; manufacturers don’t sell the right parts; it can be hard to find someone with the skills to repair things - and if you do, the costs may make the repair uneconomic. For all of these barriers there are solutions we could look at which would help us get to a far more sustainable - and cheaper! - solution.

Harland Works Repair Cafe has signed up to support the declaration as we believe it’s a good thing - would you consider asking your MP to support it too? There’s an easy process to do this on the Repair and Reuse Declaration website here. Thank you!

And the dates for our upcoming Repair Cafes are Sunday 2 - 5 pm on 12th November and 3rd December. Please bring along your broken things for help from our lovely volunteer fixers. NB we even have a bike mechanic on hand so you can bring your bike too!
